Winds of Change - ACAB Conference Dunedin 12,
13, 14 October 2001
This was the annual conference of the Association of Community Access
Broadcasters. Each year held by a different Access Station in a different
city. 2001 was the turn of Dunedin.
The conference attracted 67 registrations, with a good mix of committee
members, staff, volunteers and programme makers.
The programme aimed to offer a dynamic keynote speaker, which would appeal
to everyone. In Christina Alvarez, this was achieved and ACAB is thanked
for sponsoring her airfare. Having an overseas keynote speaker or one
that will bring a new perspective to attendees, is something that should
be encouraged when the programme is being formulated. The rest of the
programme aimed to provide a mix of workshops for both staff/management
committees and programme makers/volunteers.
The social programme is just as important, being an excellent chance
to mix informally. The choice of a bus trip around the city for lunch
and Glenfalloch for dinner, proved to be a popular choice judged by the
feed back received.
A committee of five was responsible for organizing the conference. They
included members of the Trust, Committee and Station Manager. Planning
started in March with monthly meetings and then weekly meetings. Everyone
was in email contact and having registrations and budget updates at each
meeting meant we were always aware of the financial situation. The aim
was to keep costs low, $30 for the conference and $30 for the dinner.
We are grateful to NZOA for their conference financial support, ACAB
for sponsoring Christina and would be more than happy to share any of
our thoughts on what worked and what we would change.
